Gin Gimlet: Cocktail Recipe
The best mobile bartenders have a mental library of complex and unusual drink recipes. Just like the best chefs but, as with chefs, the real skill is often how they prepare the easiest recipes.
Like the Gin Gimlet.
The authentic gimlet is gin based, but can also be made with vodka. It’s made from just two ingredients that are poured into a cocktail shaker or coupe cocktail glass. But unlike a martini that has vermouth, the recipe for a gin gimlet calls for lime juice instead of that vermouth.
The original and authentic gin gimlet recipe calls for equal parts gin and lime juice. Some will use natural ingredients Gin and Real Lime Juice maybe some Bar Syrup or Gin and Roses Lime.
The Gin Gimlet’s origins are unclear, but one story suggests it was created by Captain Gimlette a British naval surgeon. It was used to encourage sailors to drink more scurvy battling lime juice. What we do know is that it was later popularised by writings in the books of storied authors Ernest Hemingway and Raymond Chandler.
Modern recipes have been created for a less sour drink. The ratio of gin to lime has been changed to modify the taste, also the inclusion of bar syrup has been used sweetened it up a bit.
Classic Gimlet Recipe
(Makes one cocktail gimlet)
- 1 Oz. gin
- 1/2 Oz. Lime Juice
- 1/2 Oz. Simple Syrup
Measure the gin, lime juice and syrup into a cocktail shaker. Then fill the shaker halfway with ice, cover, and shake thoroughly until very cold. Strain the liquid from the shaker into a cocktail or coupe glass and garnish with a slice of lime.
If you don’t have simple syrup, it’s not hard to make your own (hence the name). Just mix equal parts sugar and water in a pot and stir occasionally as you bring it to a simmer. Once the mixture is hot and the sugar completely dissolved, take it off the heat and allow it to cool completely. Then transfer it to a jar or bottle and refrigerate until needed. It should keep for several weeks.
